ACOUSTICS AND LIGHTING PROJECT

Individual Project, 2nd year, Spring 2021

Skills Used: SketchUp, Enscape

The Acoustics and Lighting project is focused on re-evaluating and rethinking the North Dakota State University Interior Design studio space. Currently, the studio is crowded, not acoustically sound, has outdated finishes, and lighting is not adequate for the current space. These problems create a difficult learning environment for both students and teachers. To resolve the current issues within the studio space, several factors must be taken into consideration including acoustics, lighting, layout, and biophilic factors.

There are several applications put into the new design that enhance the learning environment.  To enhance the acoustical attenuation of the space, acoustical baffles, acoustical wall panels, and acoustical hanging clouds have been added to the space. The new lighting design consists of bar and circular lighting that evenly distributes light while also providing fun shape and style. In the front of the classroom, funky in-wall lighting creates an interesting design feature while brightening the front area where lectures will take place.

Overall, the new design of the space is to keep the studio looking bright, light, and also a quiet and controlled work area. The main color scheme consists of greens and oranges that brighten and bring the space to life. The lighting is adequate, bright, and uniform. There are adequate acoustical controls, and the studio has been separated for lectures, single workspaces, and lounge space.
