THE WINSLOW HOTEL

Group Project, 3rd year, Spring 2022

Skills used: Revit, Enscape

The design of the Winslow Hotel & Spa ‘s boutique hotel is inspired by the history of the Ford Building in which it is located, as well as the surrounding city and countryside. Having been built in the style of the Chicago School of Architecture, our design takes elements from this style, such as the geometric, rectilinear forms and straight edges, and incorporates them alongside elements derived from the past usage of the building as an industrial center. As the building already contains distinctive historic features, we will preserve these and incorporate them into the design, keeping the building’s unique character intact. The design incorporates a selection of colors that includes blue, green, red-orange, and cream, a palette inspired by the open prairielands found in North Dakota and the Red River that flows through Fargo. These colors were chosen to harmonize with the existing materials and finishes being preserved within the Ford Building and to encourage an atmosphere of calm and welcome. Luxurious textures such as velvet and leather along with warm woods create a feeling of grandeur while also remaining earthy and true to the Midwest. The design also aims to incorporate the elements of universal design and ADA, as well as accounting for sustainability concerns with the choice of finishes, materials, and furnishings. The space will be easy to navigate, with clear signage indicating different spaces and directing guests, and will promote guests’ wellbeing.
